It's been a while! I'm sorry. Every now and again the act of being an illustrator can get kind of tough and feeling overwhelmed and inadequate isn't strange to me. Regularly it's a fight for me to stay focused on what I should do and develop.
I have really been struggling with creating a good solid style of artwork for my first children's picture book. January was awful but I find February a lot more promising. At present I'm working on new things with the intention of showing you lots of new stuff at the end of the month. So! In the spirit of recapturing my blogging of old I thought I'd do a post about whats inspiring me at the moment....

Kay Nielsen has been on my list of favourites for a long time. Especially his work for "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1914) it was his second book and is considered to be his masterpiece and one of the most beautiful illustrated children’s books ever produced. (It's my favorite storybook).

FINALLY! I've been working on a huge project for over 2 months and I can proudly say: it's finished and all went well! Now that things are beginning to settle down again, I can get into blogging again. Today I thought I'd share how I put an image together. I'm no photoshop expert at all but sometimes its fun to share the process.

I started out with the pen drawing you can see above. The finished piece is a poster designed for the lovely blog: Silver Screen Society. If you haven't seen the site, you should definately go check it out!

So this is pretty much my entire process in six steps. After scanning I place my favorite texture over the image. Than I start editing and tidying up. I focused on colouring each section in separate layers. First the white of the fish, than the parts in black. Once this was done I decided it was far too dense with the texture behind it so I switched the background to a lighter green colour and added the white shoelaces. I thought the green wasn't quite appropriate for the movie though. So I changed that around and added some highlights to the typography. And voila!

I thought I'd share the first pics of my self designed envelope of a birdman, and the postcards containing portfolio pieces he's going to send all over the land (sorry for the quality, I've got a really crappy camera! Need to buy a new one). I've worked long and hard on this envelope and I've made about a 150 of these. A part of them is screenprinted and a part is printed digitally. I really like it. Hope you do too.

I really wanted to share the work of this talented illustrator with you. Her name is Carson Ellis. I particularly love her album art.

Carson Ellis was born in 1975 in Vancouver, Canada. She was raised in suburban New York and college-educated at the University of Montana in Missoula, where she earned a BFA in Painting in 1998. These days she is happy to be solidly an illustrator, providing art for bestselling books, such as The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart and The Composer Is Dead by Lemony Snicket. Additionally, she is the illustrator-in-residence for the band, The Decemberists, and has created art for their album covers, t-shirts, websites, posters, and stage sets.

I had quite some trouble with this week's theme. It's not the theme. But sometimes you just have trouble making something to be proud of (or so-called portfolio pieces). I must have made over 10 different posters, and all of them where.... I don't know, meh. So after crafting and sketching some more, these will have to do :). I try to find a piece of music to every theme. And I found out Muse had made a song called exactly that: soaked. So I made my interpretation of the song.

First of all, I would still like to wish everyone a happy new year! And that brings us to the theme of the week. For this years resolutions I got inspired by Make Something Cool Everyday by Brock Davis.

I've been wanting to do something similar, and decided that this was the year to do it. So I proudly present you: the poster project. A poster a week. The goal is to improve, experiment, have fun. All your comments, tips are welcome.

Since starting this posterproject, I began to hoard all great examples I could find on the internet. Than I noticed that these posters I like so much where all made by one and the same studio! So I present to you: Methane Studios.

Here's how they put it: "Methane Studios got its start in 1998 when Mark McDevitt and Robert Lee formed a partnership to produce silk screen posters for the East Atlanta club The Echo Lounge that featured some of the best independent bands in the late 1990’s. Robert and Mark,both from small Ohio towns, majored in Illustration and bonded over bad 80’s haircuts, corndogs, good music and creating art to form a friendship that would transcend into creating award winning artwork recognized worldwide. Our goal was always to tell a story, convey a message, and to make someone stop and think a little with our designs."

A good friend recently showed me the work of illustrator Jon Klassen (you may already know his work). But now I just have to post about him too!

Jon grew up in Ontario, Canada, and went to animation school at Sheridan College just outside Toronto. He currently works an animation studio in Los Angeles. His illustrations are a clever combination of clean, simple shapes and patterns. Still, his pieces feel full of depth. He also uses a really muted color palette which helps accentuate the mood.

A day at the Dutch Design Week

Last thursday I went to the DDW in Eindhoven. It was just as grand as last year and I wanted to share my highlights with you.

And what else could my illustrative eye see, but the awesome work of Tim Enthoven?

He was one of the post graduates of the Design Academy, and winner of the award of a ‘Cum Laude’ in December of last year. (2009) His illustrations are very interesting, fresh, weird, surreal, and kind of violent. Go take a look! www.timenthoven.nl

These next beautiful designs that caught my eye are from Juliette Warmenhoven. Juliette is also a graduate, but from the ArtEZ Academy in Arnhem. Her work is so beautiful. I would really like to buy the Pearl Cord. To see more you can visit her website, but also this lovely site: sightunseen, they have more images, and some good info too.

And last but not least the work of Ontwerpduo.

An example of their work (and another thing I would like to have) is: the hanging chair. It is part of the Garden of eden furniture set. The hanging chair can be placed in a tree or veranda, like a big birdcage.

Thursday......

was a great day! The opening titles made by Fons Schiedon where very weird but strangely funny. The little game with the subtitles was brilliant. After that we had presentations/artist talks by Zeitguised, Bif/the Mill and many others. Two presentations though, really stood out from the rest.

- The blackheart gang/Shy the sun

- David Wilson

The first collective of 3 artists called the blackheart gang stood out because of their different view. They didn't care for commercial assignments. They just wanted to create this world. They didn't even now how to animate before this short film!

Here's how they put it:

Nine months of part time work gave birth to The Blackheart Gang’s acclaimed short film, The Tale of How. The Tale of How is the second part of a trilogy of works called The Dodo Trilogy.

In The Tale of How we meet a giant octopus with a tree growing in his head, the terror of the Indian Ocean, OTTO THE MONSTER! His lonely pass-time is to devour the innocent dodo’s who lived on his head. We then see the dodos unite and with the help of a little white mouse, we see them escape the clutches of the terrible be-tentacled tyrant and sail off into the sunset on their mother the tree.

The Tale of How consists of a series of 13 prints, a coffee table book, and a short animated film.

Another thing that really stood out for me, was the work of illustrator David Wilson. Just watch:

Friday......
was not so great. The extended play (a series of animation shorts selected by onedotzero) was torture. All short films where dramatic, dark, unhappy, whiny. And it just kept going and going.

The short film 'Sintel' by the Blender foundation really didn't do it for me eighter. It felt like they had tried to put an entire 3 hour long feature film into 10 minutes. After 3 minutes you allready got a very intense and dramatic moment and you feel absolutely nothing for the characters.

At the end of the day though, we had a presentation of Rex Crowle and that saved it for me.

His work was fun, beautiful and impressive. He went from an illustrator to an animator and director and now is a creator of games! Little big planet is one of his projects.

So last of all, would I go back next year? Definately! It did give me a lot to look at, some eyecandy, some irritation and some inspiration.

I've finished my two projects! The graduationshow is over. I'm left dazed, happy and confused. It was a lot of hard work. And preparing the show to look its best was pretty hard too. I'm happy because it all worked out in the end. The sun is shining! Now I'm looking at a long vacation and starting up my own little freelance illustration studio.

A few weeks ago, during Vroaam! A lot of people asked who where my great examples in illustration. And I'm ashamed to say, I couldn't really give them a good answer. I love browsing trough sites as illustrationmundo, love books like illustration now! and illusive, but I don't have a personal 'illustration hero'.

So I did some thinking, and there are some people I do really like. The problem is, they don't have a personal website with their portfolio etc! I just know their work via the bookstores. I did find some small images on the web, and I don't want to keep them from you.

So here it is:

From now on, no more fun and games. I've been hanging around way too long. So intead of starting to work on these (very importent projects) I just procrastinated. Doing everything but drawing. But I have to start working. Though thinking of it as work is also a problem. Why do I always sabotage myself?

According to one of my teachers I had to start generating more traffic to my website. This is something rather difficult to me. You need to come up with something nice that keeps them coming back! So, for the time being I thought of something like this: Drawing a (in)famous public figure every week. Those people get searched trough google everyday. So if I make something with their name in it, my website might be one of the hits. And.... I get to practice my drawing.

Chinese new year project

My classmates and me where asked to decorate the city-hall for their celebration of Chinese new year (year of the tiger) together with the chinese community in the south of the Netherlands. I designed some banners that will hang over the bridges in the town-hall. they'll be printed on fabric. I hope they turn out great!
